I believe the commenter had just enough knowledge to be dumb.  That appears to me to be a B100 King air, which has Garrett engines, not PT-6's.  But whatever, was a nice way to handle a gear problem.  Couldn't have done better myself.

I watched the whole thing live on TV as it happened ....... what they don't show is the 30 minutes of fly bys whilst they tried to solve the gear problems.

As heat could have been a problem for an unfoamed runway, maybe a landing on the grass would have been an option ?..........just a thought  :-?

In any event, a very nice end to a situation out of the norm......... 8-)

If he landed on grass, would you not run the risk of the aircraft digging in on a soft surface and then doing major damage. Also if heat became an issue with a subsequent fire, vehicles could travel quicker on tarmac than the grass.

landing on grass in an airport environment could be a very bad idea due to the various lights and taxiways. hitting those while skidding will do a lot more damage to the plane than landing on the runway.

You can almost hear the disappointment in the newscaster's voice when the plane touched down perfectly.

"Darn it!  I thought we'd get to watch someone burn up and die on the air today!"

Beautiful landing.  It almost looks like they could just winch that plane up, pull down the gear, and go flying away like nothing happened!  That B1B pilot in the other thread must've been trying to one-up that guy...

I would think that the prop would disintegrate before it ripped the engine off of its mount, but thats just me. One of two things would happen; the prop would tear itself apart on impact, leaving the shaft spinning until the engine stopped, or the shock from the blade hitting tarmac would travel through the shaft and completely wreck the gearbox. In either event, the engines would likely stay firmly bolted to the wing, just with everything from the gearbox forward well and truly wrecked.

But I could be wrong, am I?

the props would bend back like sardine cans. the engines would also need to be completely torn down too which would be $$$.
