Why in the hell would you do a diesel race car? ???

Only thing I can think of is to increase the torque. Still seems crazy though.. ::)

Formula 1 will soon be switching to hybrid technology. Fuel cells and so on. Its about time motor-racing moved forward in new fuels.

although racing a car with a 5k readline is not really great for fast tracks

Using electric hybrids for racing has exciting possibilities: an electric motor yields 100% torque immediately! Fewer pit stops, too...
Wasn't there a Formula 1 (?) car entered a while back that used 4 motors (1 at each wheel) in a hybrid system, but was disqualified? Where the heck did I hear that...?

"Wasn't there a Formula 1 (?) car entered a while back that used 4 motors (1 at each wheel) in a hybrid system, but was disqualified? Where the heck did I hear that..."
That would probably be the "Mac-It Special" from the CanAm days ... it never raced but did attempt to qualify a few times.
Getting 4 (as in FOUR!) Bombadeir snowmobile engines to run in harmony would be almost impossible! ::)
As for a Diesel .... well, tons of low down torque, a great showcase for diesel technology and at an event such as LM better fuel economy and the weight increase counts for nothing.

That aside, "Effwun" is being dumbed-down to the lower end of the food chain and will probably fall over soon .... the sooner the better IMHO!

And FWIW, a turbocharged Cummins Diesel bus engine in a Kurtis Kraft chassis was on pole position for the 1952 Indy 500, running at the front until it 'retired' (the internal Indy politics a rumoured to have been involved here!)  with a clogged turbo intake.

Could I suggest that the Audi group will be flogging diesel powered civilian vehicles with a vengance very soon.

I meant four electric motors... ::) in addition to a gasoline engine... hence the term "hybrid"...
Unfortunately, I can't find any info on it. What I remember hearing is that it was entered because there was no rule on the books against it, but it outclassed the rest of the pack so badly it was banned. I think it used a simple regenerative-braking system basically to add torque- lots of it- when passing.
As for the weight: not necessarily. You'd be adding weight (electric motors, batteries), but you'd be taking away weight also (smaller engine, less fuel).
The ideal hybrid would most likely have a high-efficiency diesel powerplant, for all the reasons mentioned above... and lower operating temps.
