Doesn't this annoy the Hell out of you?

Postby Politically Incorrect » Thu Jan 01, 2004 9:31 am

I'm not much for watching tv, but ever since I can remember and yes I can remember I was around when MTV first aired!
Music videos really suck!!
Why is it you can't have a video with camera shots that don't change every tenth of a second?
The reason I asked this is because I made a point of staying up to see KISS on Dick Clark's New Years bash and they showed the performance of KISS Symphony. Out of which through the whole song you saw more audiance and less KISS. I have yet to buy the DVD but know after seeing that the DVD will be much of the same!
But this isn't limited to just the KISS performance.
Any video be it live or "produced" is like that, no camera shot holds for more than a second, they are always flashin from one shot to the next non-stop! Next time you watch a video get up and move around it gives the strobe light effect!!
A majority of videos I have seen surprise me that they don't give you a seziure!!
Why can't they make a video where the director doesn't have too much coffee and keep the camera on a shot ? They must think that this is the way you want to see it.
Not me , if I'm watching a live performance I want to see the band not the people in the front row!! Video producers and directors need to watch Austin City Limits a show where they have a few cameras set up but mainly change shots as required, guitar solo, singer etc. but not at a high speed pace.
You want high FPS tune into MTV!!
I don't know about anyone else but This really annoys me!! and I don't really see the point of watching music videos when you can't get the enjoyment of seeing your favorite artist perform! Your better off with the cd.

That's actually called the MTV look.

The majority of music video editors think that music video watchers have the attention span of 2 year olds and use the quick cut technique in excess.

Take a look at Romeo + Juliet http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117509/ done entirely in MTV style.  Boring from the start.

I didn't know it actually had a name, I thought it was called crappy directing and editing!!
Again for fear of inducing seizures if I had a 2yr old no way would I let them see these!!

Unfortunately this seems to be the common trend with all TV editing/directing. It's the natural result of digital technology. I've watched many so-called documentaries where this type of editing has completely ruined it for me. Not only that, as a migraine sufferer it often means I can't watch potentially interesting programmes unless it makes me physically ill. In my view, just because it 's possible doesn't mean you have to do it. >:(

I hope it's just a trend.... & it's one thing that really annoys me too! It's not just music - it seems be be a common thing on certain type of programs ....

I suspect it's a fashion - a bit like 'flash' on websites .... the producers don't seem to get that no one is impressed - & all it does is pee folk off....  ::)

True!
I recently bought a video of the Kai Tak airport. i knew not to expect awesome film quaility but it is nothing but 2 1/2 hrs of extremely fast switching camera shots!!
You almost have to blink your eyes real fast just to see the different airplanes.
I guess it was the producers way of trying to be "cool".
Needless to say it is pretty good in slo-mo.
But can any producer/director watch anything they make that is like this and honestly say "this is some good stuff!"?
I mean come on what is the point of making a fast pace slideshow? Some of the earliest animated cartoons aren't this bad! I have had more fun with those little "flip-books".
That is the new name! "FlipBook Video"
Buy a copy of Rolling Stone and flip the pages as fast as you can and there you have it a music video !!!!!

Hope I'm wrong but I think this has gone too far to be called a fashion. The trendy guys who came up with the idea in the first place are now the teachers. :o
It's probably seen as quite normal except by us old geezers who know better. I thought I was the only one to object to this crap. This topic has at least given me a little hope. The only way to protest is not to watch the stuff. ::) >:(

Another perfect example of this:
On our 4th of July celebration day here in the States I don't bother to "get out in the crowds" to watch the firework displays.
Ever watch a fireworks event on TV?
You always have the director trying to put people at home in "Awe" which in turn gives you the cameraman who thinks he'll be able to follow the projectile from launching point through the air just to finally find it when it is nothing but a cloud of smoke!! And of course you get 25 minutes of the people who are lucky (or dumb) enough to be there on camera for a 30 minute fireworks display. And at the end you have the announcers bragging about "how spectacular was that?"
This major annoyance first made itself present to me one July fourth while I was at the nursing home my aunt was in. She always loved fireworks but could no longer go to see them so that year I decided to spend the holiday with her and enjoy them on tv with her. That was over 15 years ago and to this day a fireworks display on tv is the same!!
In high school I took a course Media/broadcasting where we were trained in TV production and one of the first rules was if you were a cameraman is that you get the shot and hold it until told otherwise. Apparently this no longer holds true.

im with fret, well in part, well u see.... i have the KISS Meadowlands concert, called The Last KISS, and i think that by far is one of the best, not only because is KISS playyin ::) but because the show the how, they rarely show the ppl, i mean who cares about them?! 8) but seriously, i also have the AC/DC SARStock performance, and to be frank, i didnt mind the camera dude wandinrg off in the crowd (if u guys saw it u might know why...) or the Paul McCartney back to the US tour, also a very well made piece of memorabilia... i have thoe and i dont have complaints... now, while i lived in the states i never watched MTV, i think they r a bunch of sellouts who only care for the money. i always watched VH1, i think is farr better, and they show true music, not some hip hop stuff that uses no musical instruments whatsoever and that they moan and grunt throughout the song. i aldo have a few clips of Black Sabbath's Reunion concert... i do have a few complaints but not many.... what i really hate is when the guiatr/drum/bass solo is on and the camera dude moves away to the ppl, they dont show the solo :O how sh!tty is that?!?!?! i think it all depends on what u watch, and it would be outrageous if the KISS Alive IV DVD was 90%ppl 10%band....

Alfred Hitchcock had the right idea. He used a fixed camera for a lot of his best & most dramatic action shots. I have always thought it blindingly obvious that the best way to film a firework display (or any sort of display) would be from a fixed point so you can watch it as if you were there yourself. I see no way of improving a display of anything by switching views & trying to be clever. The only people who still seem aware of this in the UK are the cameramen & directors of the excellent snooker, golf & cricket coverage.

PS. How many times have you watched your favourite group or band & just as the lead guitarist/bass player/drummer/whoever gets to the part you always wondered how the hell they did it - the director switches the shot to the wrong member of the band or the audience? >:(
This has been happening constantly for as long as I can remember. I think it must be me after all. ???

That is my main complaint exactly!!! That is what happend last night on the show that got me ticked and why I decided to start this topic!!
And Alfred Hitchcock: I always admired as a director. Although I have read allot of people bash his style of film making i belive it to be some of the best!! It almost made you feel like you were there with the character on screen!!
And that was his intentions.
To bad to many producers/directors/editors etc, refuse to learn from such simple but effective means of capturing ideas on film (tape/ disc).
To many get the idea that people want the "live" effect, well I'm sorry to say but when I'm at a show I'm not looking at a thousand different places a minute, I'm focusing on what is on stage! Well unless if the lady next to me decides to show her wares! :)
And that is what I would like to see on TV/DVD/TAPE etc, the show the way you would see it if you were there. If I want "spectacular" visual effects I'll watch a movie!
But a band I want to see the band not each member every other second but as a whole and then as each member by themselves as warrented and of course the "wares" shot here and there will be fine also:)

I love golf on TV.  Shot of man hitting ball.  Shot of ball in the air - called the most boring 5 seconds on television.

Then, "We'll be back with more golf action after this ..."

I like the blimp shots, though.  A very good innovation.

The majority of music video editors think that music video watchers have the attention span of 2 year olds . . .

When my little sister was five, I subjected her to MTV (with my constant supervison) just to test a theory similar to this.

She sat and watched thirty seconds of the videos and then complained that she wanted to watch something different.  When I asked why she said "I don't know what's going on . . ."

My conclusion: Children from ages 3 to 10 have a greater attention span than those of 11-25. ::)  We are such a superficial culture, dependent upon flashing images to hold our attention.

Since that point I have watched MTV only at 3 AM, in hotel rooms and when there are only infomercials on TV.  I watch VH1 and Fuse occasionally, as they are a little more mature in their choice of videos. ::)

I could write an entire editorial piece about this blurb, but I will refrain for the sake of the reader. ;)

Ender. Maybe you should write your editorial & send it to every record company, TV station, directors schools & anyone else you can think of. I would willingly sign it along with 1,000s of others. All the time we're prepared to put up with this rubbish they must think it's what we want & therefore subject us to more of the same. ::)
