"hot water heater".

If the water is already hot, why are we heating it?

It just occurred to me that I've never seen one of these 'hot water heaters'. Must be one of those Yank things again. I'm afraid there's no hope. :P ;D :D

Clearly, Aunt Agnes was standing too close to the hot water heater, not realizing it was so non-un-inflammable... but she may have only been trying to avoid a suddenly intumescent Uncle Albert... curry-fumes from the cat may have played a role, however... he was last seen racing down the street, tail smoking...

That's in a class of its own. ;D

Good job I have a sense of humour. With all these new rules & regulations constantly coming at me from all directions I wouldn't have lasted long in my job without it. You have to see the funny side of these things or it could easily drive you right round the bend. ::) ;)

Excellent, I think from now on I'm going to use non-un-inflammable.  If your going to confuse people, might as well do a good job of it. ;D ;)

Interesting how flammable and inflammable both mean basically the same thing, but edible and inedible don't. ;D

That was the whole basis of the misunderstanding & why the word flammable was invented. That's what's so amusing about it. The whole thing is based on a complete fallacy. ::) ;D

PS. You really need a good understanding of the English language to appreciate the joke. The bureaucrats responsible for those regulations obviously didn't understand it or needed a sense of humour transplant, like most of their ilk. ;)

I can't go back so far to know from memory when "flammable" came into use. I do remember seeing "inflammable" warnings, however. The dictionary (at least, this one) still states: [b]flam

It sometimes seems a thing of pity for a first language. 8)
