most do here, even as i was coming to the end of my time there they had the younger kids working the warehouse. its not that difficult. generally though it would be required two people under 18 had to lift the heavier things like TV's, washing machines and so on. Although again that was a newer thing when i returned after a year away. when i started out i was left to do these things alone. Good for building up strength if not a little dangerous.

Well Craig, if it's your intention to put Matt off a supermarket job you seem to be making a pretty good job of it. ::) I don't think any respectable company would get away with disregarding the health & safety regulations like that for long, especially where minors are concerned. I see no need for him to risk breaking the law anyway. 35 hours per week should be more than enough for a 15 year-old. IMHO

Of course, the best thing would be a little job at the airfield, if that's close enough. ;)

I will name the company for his benifit. I worked for the Co-op. I am not trying to put him off the job, just to avoid working for them. Sainsburys would be a good choice. They pay really well for the job.

I really don't think they'd have workers comp for teenagers, Hype. Proabably after you turned 18, yes, but you wouldn't be working in the warehouse under 18.

Here you're required by labor law to carry workman's comp if you employ other people.  If you're the sole employee, no.  But if you've got just one other person, yes.

Well, dont know what the farming is like over there.  But around here theres always farm work available somewhere...Most will take anyone they can get, and the pay is great...Have many friends who work at the grocery store and fast food for $5.25 an hour...Its easier work and screwy schedules.  I have to bust my a$$ but making anywhere from $8.50 to $18 an hour its more then worth it.

Downsides...I'm working there illegaly...No insurence of any kind.  All the money I recieve is tax free.  But if something was to happen to me there...which there is plenty of ways to get injured...then im just SOL.  Only time we ever run up to code is the day of an inspection ::).  Its just easier for 5 guys to do everything then it is to trip over 10 more that codes require :-X  No work permit from the school...illegal sence im not quite 18...Personaly i feel the school should have nothing to do with my life outside the doors >:(

But overall...Its hard work for high pay and dont have ridiculous uniform ::)  Personaly even if it was low pay ide probably choose this over fast food.  So might check around...If you know someone then its even easier.

It's not so easy to get a job...I've been trying for months.  Supermarkets, shops, fast food...no where is employing where I live right now. ::)  There's a themepark within walking distance of my house and there's no jobs there either! >:(

So yeah, good luck, I just hope there's more oppurtunities where you live littleport... ;)

Supermarkets are the worst employers you can get (in holland that is) they only hire you until you get 18...

Hi littleport2003:
Perhaps I could expand a little on what Doug suggested in his last post about the local airfield.

Have you tried to approach the folks that are going to be doing the training?

I always found that most of these people will remember the past and the cash flow problems they had years back.  Now I am not telling you to beg for a job ::)but mention to them you are interested in starting to learn to fly and you would like to take the lessons from them.

Let them know how old you are and the problems you are having trying to obtain a job to take lessons.  Mention to them you DO NOT WANT TO GO INTO DEBT OR SELL YOUR MOTHER ETC....but you would love to be able to hang out and do odd jobs for them for flying time.

Start hanging around for a week-end or two...show them some interest.

Sooner or later someone will notice you and things will start to happen from there. ;)

Remember one thing...if you don't get an offer of training but an offer of...sure kid we will take you up for a bit at the end of the day....take it...there are too many rules and regulations for a company to use the Barter System...you help them and we will do this.

Don't ask them to put something in writing...if they offer you a flight at the end of the day take it.

You might be surprised...you may not like flying...who knows?

I have always found if you show some interest and do a little more than what is asked...most pilots have a soft spot in their heart to give someone a break.

Hope this helps :)

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Let's see...
Yard work, dog-walking, babysitting, car-washing (and detailing),running errands for the housebound, etc., etc. These are things I never tried, but should have.
When I was 14 I had a weekend gig caddying and dew-whipping at the local golf course, and I  before that (now that I think about it) I had a little paper route for one summer. No way to get rich, but it helped supplement my meager allowance.
But yes, depending on local labor laws, you might get part-time work at a supermarket or restaurant; something like that.
