Taming a tail rotor?

Postby LoftyCyborg » Sat Nov 26, 2011 11:46 am

I have several add-on helicopters for FSX. Some of them fly really sweet. But a couple are really squirrely. One in particular I would like to reduce the sensitivity of the tail rotor. It flies pretty well aside from the fact that the rotor is about 10X as sensitive as all the other helicopters. Is there a setting, perhaps within the cfg files for that model, that I can adjust to tame it down? I don't want to make an adjustment that would affect 'all' the helicopters, so I don't want to adjust like my joystick settings for example.

In the aircraft.cfg file.....

In the [Helicopter] section, try reducing the value of the 'pedal_control_scaler='.

As always, back up the original .cfg file before editing.
At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

This particular model, an Enstrom 280, has a "sim.cfg" file instead of aircraft.cfg, but the file has the same kinds of information in it. I changed pedal_control_scaler from its default value of 1.0 to a value of 0.5. That does indeed make the tail easier to handle. At the default setting, the thing practically 'wags' when flying at a slow forward speed, making me have to chase it, and it is very hard to stabilze into steady forward flight. I had never seen any other heli do that in FSX, and I've flown several models.

I'm not really crazy about this model because, like the R22, it feels severely underpowered. But at least now I can fly it. It does look nice, for what that is worth.

Thank you! :)
