Way back in the days of FS98 I did it a bit but have not done it since. If I don't want to do a long flight you have a whole world full of airports. Sit down and make some kind of short hop flightplan that you can save and come back to with ease. It helps keep me involved in the sim
I look from the outside to look for landmarks. I dont fly jets. I did increase time once in a Maule from Trenton, NJ to El Centro, Cali

I do most of the time, but that's because I don't have time. I try to not use it much, I will climb to altitude at 1X and then increase the rate to sorta skip cruise. I do it because the flights I do (normally 3h+, longest 13 hours and 45 minutes) just are TOO long for the time I have to fly them. When I fly for my VA I only use 4X though.

i use TrackIR in the VC to search for landmarks...
speaking of which, i dont ever speed up the time, because with the scenery around me, i use TrackIR to look out of the windows and stuff to check out the view. if i ever need to look down, i just turn the plane on its side and look at the downward window.
if u dont hav TrackIR, you should get it - it does not dissapoint.
I would get it if I had the money. Unfortunately I have this computer to pay off by June, and a few holidays and birthdays for which I need presents.. not to mention I also need to save up for a car by August.
