TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD

Postby blackgranada77 » Tue Aug 16, 2016 8:37 am

Hi. Can someone please explain the difference between TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024/2048/4096 which is located in the FSX.CFG file under GRAPHICS and TEXTUREMAXLOAD=6 which is in the same file under the DISPLAY heading. Thanks, Dave in KALN.

The TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD IS THE RESOLUTION YOU ARE USING
The TEXTUREMAXLOAD=6 is how high the slider is turned up increasing this number will increase density but can cause frame rate issues depending upon your system.
As a rule of thumb the more dense you go the harder your system has to work to display it. You need a descent CPU and video card to max these settings out otherwise you will get stutters during a flight as your system is just not able to display it fast enough.

Texture-max-load corresponds to the maximum resolution of texture images that are displayed. Default is 1024x1024 pixels. 2048x2048 is better resolution (crisper graphics). 4096x4096 is high definition.
The restraint here is the resolution of the textures that are available. Some developers include 2048 or 4096 textures. If the textures are not at that resolution, your sim can't disply them that high. They will be displyed at the highest resolution they are, based on how you have set your config file.

So if you set cfg to be 1024, that is as high as the resolution will go, even if the textures are 4096. If you set 4096, then you can disply upto 4096, but if the textures are only 2048, then they will only appear as 2048. Does that make sense?

Also note that if yoqu set 4096, it will be wiped out if you ever go in game to adjust sliders. I believe fsx defaults to 1024, and steam edition defaults to 2048.

Either way, how you set it is to first go into the sim and set all the sliders the way you want it. Then close the sim and fing your cfg file. Save a backup copy. Then edit the cfg with the texture-max-load setting of your choice. Insert the edited cfg back into the sim folder structure, and you are done. Don't open or adjust any of your settings from within the sim, or you may lose thetweak you just applied.

Good luck

Don't spread mis-information Jetranger... :naughty:
That is not real value that anyone should consider setting.

And I have found out that FSX:SE is actually defaulted for 4096, which might be why so many people think it looks better than boxed FSX.
