It's pretty close to real. You can't use full power for takeoff, when the airspeed is low, torque loads are high, when the engine can develope 100+ inches of manifold pressure. You can use it in short bursts for acceleration (no pun intended) when the airspeed is relatively high (less torque loading).

These are hand-grenade engines..  :o

I do know that mustangs will overheat if they just sit on the ground and idle, has anyone tried that?  I'm sure that Reno Racers would be no different.

I really want accelleration now.  See what happens when you pull the prop pitch waaay back with the throttle full forward.

Remember, RENO racers are usually not "real planes".

These are numbers off the top of my head..

The WWII Mustang was less than 2,000hp, wasn't it ?   ...  A Reno racing Mustang can produce near 4,000hp.. and its wings are shortened to boot. They aren't the same airplanes..

Most certainly arnt the same... P-51 has nothing on the Reno racers.

They just happen to have a similar body type.   ;D

The Mustang included with Acceleration is so modified for racing that the engine can produce 150 inches of manifold pressure, stock Mustang can produce 60 inches. Now, anyone want to take a guess what happens when you almost TRIPLE the power the engine is rated for while running it past its rated RPM? It will blow up. Catch fire. Throw a Piston.

Whatever.

For takeoff fly with 60 inches of manifold pressure, you may also be abled to get to around 80 inches without damage. You can also press shift - X to inject Anti Detonation Fluid into the engine which should allow you to run at 146 inches of manifold pressure without damage, and 150+ inches for sprints. However, I am unsure if ADI is only included with the Reno air races.

Once you understand what you're doing you can get nice times at Reno:

Real mustangs don't usually take off at full power.  We have a P-51 pilot on the field and I believe he told me they restrict it way down on takeoff to spare the engine.  The biggest use for the supercharger is to reach high altitudes, not to create major manifold pressures on the ground.

A couple of links. The first is a rundown of aircraft much like the those from accelleration.

The second is an article that mentions blown engines, and partially damaged engines at various
