You say SP2 needs testing on its own. Well why not now? Surely 3-4 weeks is enough for beta testing? The release of SP2 could come at the same time as the x-pack. I would like to see Phil's response to this question.

If only there was a place where we could bash Microsoft, Wilco, Captain Sim.. sigh

I have a suggestion

Instead of coming in here with the feeling you want to bash something, which is obvious from the first post, why don't you wait for Phil to respond to your inquiry.

2 things you need to be aware of

1. Aces is not marketing and as such they do not have control over what marketing may do.

2. If there is a marketing reason for the delay, I am sure Phil will mention it because he has been up front about everything in FSX, including dealing with the mistakes they made in releasing the artist conceptions of DX10 too soon, and the fact that he can not control what the Windows team does with that artwork.

If that is part of the reason for the delay, then so be it. I do know there are technical reasons for the delay. Since you are not a developer, or work on the project, I suggest you wait for an answer from Phil. The slant and suggestion of bashing you have placed on the situation is exactly what Mr. Taylor is NOT going to respond to and will do nothing constructive for this thread or forum.

also, if I read Phil's message correctly, this is the end of certain backwards compatibility in MSFS.

I wonder if this is a hint that as of FS11 you must have DX10 hardware. There may be no DX9 support?

At least that is how I interpret part of the message about backwards compatibility, I may not be reading that correctly.

If there is a commitment to move forward and no longer move backwards, I think it would be a good idea to consider that x64 should also be a move forward. Starting from scratch I would think a x32 and x64 version could be possible.

I think so too. And really, it's not that hard to produce an x64 FS. You would only need to change

I shall rephrase.

Dear Mr. Taylor,

You could you please explain to me the reason(s) to why SP2 is being released before Christmas whilst the x-pack is being released at the end of this month.

Thank you,

on behalf of the people who are not getting the x-pack.

Now, if he is not going to reply, my views are clearly stated, and they seem logical. I have not been "bashing" at anyone in this forum. Forums are for debates/discussions, questions, information.. etc.

That deserves a response.

A suggestion that its all a marketing ploy and a deception, and, then a suggestion that a bashing area is needed, does not.

I assure you, there are legitimate technical reasons for the delay but I will let Phil address those because I am not aware of details, and, if there are some marketing reasons for an extended delay, I am sure Phil will answer the best he can. He has never come here or any other forum and posted anything but the strait information.

I am sure Phil will respond when he reads your question.

Phil, Thank you for the update. I for one cant wait to tell my wife (ask her) that I will be getting the Acceleration pack (please sweety, I really would like to get it)  ;)
Now here is the dumb question...If I D/L SP2 when it comes out, then I get the Acceleration pack, will there be any conflict between the two SP2's?   (Hey, If I didnt ask, someone else would have  ;)  )

Personally I can't wait. No one can ever accuse me of licking ass. I don't do it, period. I started this site because I was passionate, obsessed with & amazed by the potential the FS canvas had to offer.

We're driving down an amazing road guys. It's night & we don't know what's ahead. We can be sure there is no danger so sit back & enjoy the fact that we get a fantastic amount of entertainment (& education thrown in) for the cost of a cheap night out!

The main thing is it has to stay open & easy. Learn from CFS3. Restrict the easily created & freeware addons & the program will hit the dust.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. – Leonardo da Vinci

Phil's posting has left some of us in the modelling community with anticipation, and, from *my own point of view* dread.

Anticipation because of the new features coming down the pike.

Dread, because suddenly *some* of us will have to either quickly learn new tools, or hope that sufficient information is available for existing tools to be quickly updated.

Loading FS-X Acceleration will deprecate, as I understand it, "older"

Phil,
I have a question.

It is actually a very humble one at that.

My limited "free time" away from my work and family is a set of pair of Boston Acoustics headphones, my wife getting ready to watch a "girlie" movie on The Lifetime Network for the next 3 hours, my two little girls fast asleep and my tired 40 year old arse sitting down in front of $5,000 worth of hardware and about $4,000 worth of payware flight simulator.
Ahhh. I can actually sit there at dawn, in my cockpit, hot cup of coffee on my left, camera on my lap,..
ready to explore 2 guaranteed hours of virtual bliss.

Snow in FS9 on Winter Wonderland
The pitter patter of that light snow fall so gentle that the pine trees are enjoying this surreal place....

Snow in FSX on Winter Wonderland.
"Quick everybody, grab an umbrella, it looks like a serious hailstorm! Grab the coffee and time to get back to reality!"

I know you are planning on 3rd party weather developers to improve this very menial effect,
But a simple request...
Make it like FS9's soft snow fall!

Sometimes taking in the Sim's environment while sitting in a field waiting for the right wind,
is as surreal as landing in that remote airfield with nobody to talk to with a heavy fog setting in somewhere in FSX...
As Real As It Gets...!

i know this is trivial and not directed at you but maybe towards a 3rd party developer who may read this. Winter is approaching!
Thanks..

Dave

EDIT: I just re-read the comment about backwards compatibility. I think that is pointed at compatibility with older MSFS and not the rendering engine.

Nick,

I re-read that part a number of times in Phil's blog and I still think he is saying this stuff as a way of "preparing the community" for a more "general" change in the backward compatibility approach they have maintained for a long time.  Maybe TOO long.

It really is not in the best interests of the future of the sim if they can't move significantly forward to many possibilities just because they want to make sure that older stuff will still work.  At some point maybe it is time for a whole new "core" engine driving the next 5-10 years of the sim development.  "One giant leap for simkind".

If that is the trade off for getting really great advances....... the heck with backwards compatibility.  ;)

best,
