You didn't make a backup or hard copy record of your FSX key, and that's Microsoft's fault?

Hi - did you loose your box? Also FSX Steam is on regular sale for the price of a beer ....... and there are other solutions too.
It may also be worth considering the upgrade to P3D (academic) where there is constant progress in bringing the program forward.

Similar to what Pete just said the easiest way [and very cheap way] out of this is to simply get FSX-Steam Edition. You can use your addons and its far better than FSX boxed ever was. You will fly happily ever after, especially if you add the ORBX Global base scenery etc.

My keys for FSX GOLD were inside the jewel case on a piece of poster board. So if you lost or tossed the jewel case no one to blame but your self.'
I have a habit of making a note pad that has all my keys in it and back that up on a thumb drive. Even the digital downloads I keep the keys in the notes folder and also in my email folder under a folder called passwords those will always be there I still have the keys for ACTIVE SKY which is about five or six years old and have the original install file if I ever wanted to go back. Not that I would as the current version of Active Sky is ACTIVESKY16 and it is far superior to the older versions.
Now I have to be honest with you Ever since they made that big update back in November last year I think to Windows 10 I am not able to activate FSX ACCELERATION I had to manually download and install the service packs and because of this I have some minor problems with FSX so that one I can blame on MICROSOFT
But every time I try to install ACCELERATION it deactivates FSX and gives you no screen to register ACCELERATION. So you are stuck FSX is no longer registered and will not run for a long time and you have no way of activating ACCELERATION. That sucks. :x
But I do have FSX STEAM and use it now more than the boxed version.
I am one of the lucky ones I did not have to buy FSX STEAM because I was one of the BETA testers for it I get to keep the program

Whether you have the key or not is irrelevant. Microsoft will no longer activate FSX in any edition as they do not support it. If you are like me and prefer not to fly online, P3d is the way to go. Your addons will also work fine.

P3D is not an option for those of us who are hobbyists and who can read the fine print. I've seen recent reports of FSX activation by the automated phone system, working fine. And there's always FSX Steam. And, finally, many FSX 32-bit-based addons are not going to work in the latest training software from Lockheed-Martin.

There always seems to be a mixture of fortunes with FSX, last month my hdd keeled over, after the usual lengthy reinstall of windows etc my next task was to to reinstall fsx.
My fsx is also the Gold version, fsx installed, re-registered with the key online and ran ok. Acceleration installed and re-registered ok and ran ok followed by my addons. The only time I had to use a phone line was the very first time I installed it.

So the online system is still active but is it active world wide and if not why not for everybody.

That is strange I have both the boxed version and the Steam version and I have not noticed any differences in ground texture at all. you might want to check your sliders out. If you have the sliders on the boxed version set diffidently
from those in the Steam version that will create a difference. If any thing I have been having problems with the boxed version where I lose my textures all together. Sometimes when I go into spot view I can only see the wing lights of the aircraft and no airplane at all. And if I am on the ground parked at a gate the entire building disappears and I loose my menus at the top. I have yet to figure out what is causing this as it does not do it all the time.
I wondering if it has something to do with the fact that I had to install SP1 and SP2 as I could not get Acceleration to activate I never get that screen. I am thinking about uninstalling the service packs and reinstalling them to see if that might help.

I have the exact same problem, I use the FSX Gold boxed version and I have SP1 and SP2 installed on Windows 8.1. Please post if you find a fix.

There is no differences between FSX Acceleration and FSX Steam, everything inside is just the same. Of course FSX Steam has a few fixes to bugs and performances, and also the new multiplayer layer, but the content of the sim is the same. Same textures, same planes, same sceneries etc...

The thing is, FSX Steam might require a little bit different tweaking than FSX (but I'm not even sure...).
For those who have problems installing or uninstalling or activating FSX, just stop wasting your time.
If you want to keep using an obsolete sim, just switch to FSX Steam.
If you want something more modern, switch to P3Dv4 (but be Prepar3d to say bye-bye to some of your addons, especially the FS9 stuff).
Today there is simply no reasons at all to keep wasting your energy with FSX boxed.

I am getting to that point I have all ready moved a lot of stuff over to FSX Steam as I do not have any issues with that. But I may try one more thing before I say good bye to the Boxed version.
I think Windows 10 is really the big culprit here as I never had any problems until Windows 10 had that last big update.
Right after the update I discovered FSX was no longer activated and that is when the S**T hit the fan.
I had to uninstall and reinstall FSX which went with no problems I activated it and than installed Acceleration but never got the opportunity to activate it and installing Acceleration deactivated FSX
I tried several times with no luck and yes I ran the unlocking tool before I reinstalled FSX but had the same problem I never got a activation screen after installing Acceleration
So I manually installed service pack 1 and service pack 2.

I have FSX-SE installed alongside FSX Gold + Acceleration & never had a problem with either on Win 10 64-bit (or any other Windows OS).

I haven't noticed any great improvement with SE over the boxed version. I actually prefer the latter.

The rumour that Microsoft no longer activates fsx is false, I recently reinstalled fsx gold dvd version normally with the online activation for both fsx and accel with no problems and using the automated phone system on another pc and both ways worked to activate fsx and accel.
I agree with Hagar I have not had any problems with my dvd version of fsx gold and it runs very well on the computers that I have it installed on.
