Pollution and Haze

FSX including FSX Steam version.

Pollution and Haze

Postby Travis » Mon Jan 09, 2006 10:23 am

I wonder, since there is so much that MS decided to include with this new version, will there be pollution and/or haze that hovers over cities at appropriate times?

I only ask because as I was coming home today, I noticed that there was an awful lot of haze over downtown Dallas.  Seems like a really interesting and potentially hazardous flight problem.

The 'yellow' fog/mist we get in FS9 already looks like polution to me! Would be interesting to see a 'smog' hanging over LA in the summer though.

An inversion layer, that would be a good effect.

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Not that easy to spot, unless you know what to look for.
Very common in my neck of the woods though...makes for some interesting approaches at times  :)
But yes it would be sweeet!

What exactly is an inversion layer? is that the area where the haze stops and has what almost looks almost like a hard surface?

as far as i know from my real world flying experiences, the inversion layer is the point where the ascending hot air gets cold enough to head back down...

according to the pilot i flew with, once you're higher than the inversion layer there's a LOT less turbulence...

or maybe i'm just talking nonsense ::)

BTW: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! FS10 IS FOR REAL!!!!!!!!!!! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!! (hadn't done that yet)

Yeah, you got the hang of it.
Generally speaking, the air temp decreases with around 2C degrees per 1000ft. However if the air temp INCREASES instead, then we have ourself a nice little inversion layer.

Inversions are stable masses of air that prevents vertical movements in the air. If you are climbing and suddenly hits an inversion layer (which is a warmer mass of air) you'll immediatly notice a drop in the vertical speed, but you can almost count on a change in wind direction and speed aswell.

Inversions can be "created" in different ways. The most common one around here is ground and front inversions.

A good way to spot an inversion is by looking at chimneys. If the rising smoke column suddenly stops and instead goes horizontaly...then we have an inversion

I am sure dx10 can handle that kind of thing quite well. The question is if they include it.

Oh, I get it. I don't think I have experienced that yet. And I don't see why they couldn't include it in FSX, In fact they could have included that in FS9, but it was probably just overlooked. who knows.

That is a good example.  In a preveious life, on the ramp at Nellis, looking back towards Las Vegas you could see  there was a fire. Thick black smoke billowed up and up. Then, as if it reached a glass ceiling, it just spread out like slowly pooring water on the floor.  The very very light breeze then swirled it about.  I was think ing how pretty it was looking, then realised that if the smoke was not going up, what other shit in air was I breathing in :o

Sometimes on real world wheather you can see occasionally haze or fog in LAX, to replicate the wheather and haze their , it may only go so far in FSX. ;) ;D

Huh?  this is an old thread, why did you pull it up just to mention to pat that there are kids on here?  I think he knows...   And if your commenting on his Sig hes had it for months, nobody (that I know of) has complained in an open thread. If you have issues with what people put on their post send them a message via PM not on a random 1 month old thread  ;) ;D
