End of the Earth?

Postby WandererSailor » Mon Apr 30, 2007 11:42 pm

I flew out of Deadhorse, Alaska (PASC) today, heading more or less due north only to discover that I could not circumnavigate the Earth across the poles!  To make matters weirder, I noticed that my plane displayed odd physics and I felt almost like I was playing the dreaded X-Plane (ver 7) martian scenerio.  Anyone else experience this arctic madness?

Yes, the FS9 3D world is a cylinder and not a sphere, therefore the north and south poles do not exist in FS9 and the sim stops far short of the poles.

Blah!  Don't listen to them!  You just discovered what mariners have known for a thousand years.  You've reached the edge!

Well... That explains why I could never fly from the US to Russia in an SR-71  :o

It also explains the very... odd... flight planning for hops across the "pond" in the default flight planner  :o

sweet, I can't wait to get my new PC to play FSX, even though I love the Lovecraftian effect of the madness @ the poles.  w00t

Lots of crazy things can happen when you get way up there. I advise that you tread carefully when in unknown waters. You might get bitten by a dragon or something...

One thing - the fact that your gauges go nuts is adds a nice bit of realism, even if it's not for the same reason (because of the cylinder effect) as it is in real life (magnetic anomalies). It is a lot of fun trying to navigate your way around, and something to attempt especially if getting bored with FS9. Crossing Antarctica took me a week, following Google Earth images to compare to what was seen from the cockpit, kind of like feeling your way down a dark staircase while holding the railing. A rough idea of how the flightplan ended up looking like is below, and was the only occasion where I had to cheat to refuel.

In what airplane did you make the trip, CAFedm?

There was not really a need for you to prove it. One of the very few innovations of "the cross" is finally a spherical geography. Shame it's paid so dearly. :-? ;)

It sounded as if there was doubt, so I offered proof of one of the many great new features in FSX. ;)
