IFR - Help!

I can take off and fly successfully anywhere with no crashes. However, anywhere means to the area of my destination.

I always get directed to the area around the airport and then the controller kick me off and leves me to find out where I am. I am not alligned to the runway at all, I may even be nearer another aiport so could land at the wrong one and the result is I often crash because I never get to fly an approach. In real life pilots are flying their approach for miles beforehand.
In flight unlimited 2 I always remember that on ILS landings they directed you right up to the approach.

Here's the way the controllers handle the situation in FS9:

When you're about 60 miles from the airport, flying IFR, you'll hear "Airline 123, turn left heading 180, expect vectors ILS runway 27".

You'll gradually get more instructions for turning left, and then turning right, all the time descending until you reach about 2700.

The last thing you'll hear from the approach controller is "Airline 123, you are 20 miles west, turn right heading 240, you are cleared ILS runway 27, contact tower on 129.35". Now, you're not aligned to the runway, this is where you have to have the ILS tuned and ready to capture the needles a couple of minutes after this final call from the APP controller.

In FS9, pilots are flying their approach for miles beforehand too....!

Yeah I agree with al that, so maybe the ILS isn't tuned in. Where do I get the number from? Do I have to enter it in, cuz  I've never done it!
In Flight Unlimited 2 they give you a list of the ILS numbers. Where do I find them in FS9, is it in the inflight map?

Ben, when you plan your flight click on your destination in the right hand panel in map mode. Then click on the airport runway itself (you'll probably have to zoom in because unlike 2002 where it was dead easy, for some reason 2004 is stupidly fiddly to get the screen to come up).

Hi Saitek...Yes. open the map and click on the airport icon of your choice..all the ils etc. info is in there!..........Click the Nav1 button on the Radio stack and tune it into the standby position (right hand number) then click the arrow to make it jump across to the  active position (left side) Don't forget to switch the GPS/Nav switch to nav and the AP. Apr. button on if you want to land using the AP that is........Switch the AP off as you cross the threshold and land manually. I guess if you just want to line up with a runway then you could just fly straight down one of the green "feathers on the GPS display... or just use them to get yourself into position to make contact with the ils signals
