Why are you painting in 16 Bit ?
I normally convert the textures to 24 Bit, then repaint and convert to another format
The textures should also work in 8 Bit, DXT1 and 32 Bit

I repaint in 16 bit format because the program I use to paint the aircraft converts them from DXT3 to 16 bit. Then when I am done painting I just use to POSKY Image tool to convert them back.
