Can .gmax files be opened in 3ds max, or do I need to find a file converter to convert it to a .max file. Because I am currently working on a model from the
Wing Commander 3, and I can finish it sooner. I know it can be done the other way around, but not from gmax to 3ds max. Also if anyone could tell me which of the sdk's will create the configurations files I'll greatly appreciate it.

There is a roundabout way to convert a gmax file to another format - using the Quake III exporter/gamepack. If you can get a Quake III model into 3DSmax, you're in good shape.
As to which of the SDKs creates the configuration files, presuming you're looking at creating a flightsim model, you want to look at the FSEdit SDK.
