Sock Flies Europe:

Postby Sock » Sat May 22, 2004 2:49 pm

It has taken me too long to post this.  I think it was a month ago I posted the last leg! :-/  But for some reason it seems I have more work around the end of the school year.

If it has been too long for you too to remeber what happened last time, as always links for the last 14 legs are at the bottom of the post.

But, when we last left off, I had finally gotten out of sandy North Africa and found myself on the beautiful Greek island of Crete!  I had stopped to refuel, and then it was time to find Athens...

My tanks weren't exactly dry, but a little juice never hurt.  It was still rather early in the morning, about 8:30.  Athens, I figured, was about a two hour flight north across the sea.

After I finished refueling, I climbed back inside Peggy and turned her over.  The engines came alive again and I taxied to the active.

Once on the runway, I pushed the trottle forward and brought Peggy up in the air.

Image

I turned north as the coast of Crete slipped beneath me.

Image

I felt a little safer than normal flying over water.  Unlike  before, now there were many small islands around I could land on if anything went wrong.

Image

About an hour after I left Crete, I assumed wrong, I found the Greek mainland and Athens.

I spent about a half hour flying around the city checking out the sites from above, like the acropolis.

Image

Then I tuned into Hellinikon Athens Airport, got permission to land, and set up my pattern.

Image

Image

I put Peggy down easy, a little right of the center line and exited the active.

Image

On the taxiway, I ran into a Soar Airways heavy, and ATC made the big guy wait. ;D

Image

At parking I shut her down and tied her down.  As I headed off for an early lunch, I had no idea that I'd need to find a place to stay for a couple of weeks.

Next time, I will fly into Italy.  Thats all I know really, I have to fly the leg this week.  I have not flown in a really really really really really long time. :(  And I need to get at it again.  So hopefully I will have time this week, and all of you watching won't have to wait another month. :P
