Next task was the removal of the nose landing gear strut to replace all the seals. Here we can see what's on the inside.

The strut




Here we can see the centreing cam. When the aircraft is airborne the strutt does to full extension. The cams come together to ensure that the gear is straight before retraction.











Pull the table cloth out and see it it all stays in place......on second thoughts

Thanks Matt...wonderful shots and very educational for some of our members.

I always liked walking through the maintenance hangars and chewing the rag with you lot.  I still do get through the hangars when I am with one of our children and I always manage to learn something new.

By the way do you have any of my tools there?   :)

No sign of rust or corrosion there, although they are exposed to the elements!

The Nose landing gear on large Passenger Jets always looks very fragile from a distance, (compared to the Mains), and I'm amazed that they can support the landing load, and final weight of the Aircraft... ...!

Always likely/too easy to fail on a heavy nose-first landing!

Rather more substantial that the front Telescopic Forks on my Motor Bikes!.... ....!

Very interesting! I have a friend who makes main gear parts in a huge CNC machine. If he has a bad part at the end of the shift it can cost his company large money.
