Range fires are to replenish the soil for grazing later in the year. They usually do it here in Kansas in the Flint Hills around April or May. Driving from Wichita to KC the visibility can be near zero at times, and they have to issue permits to the ranchers so everyone doesn't do it at once and create an air hazard.
It does create an interesting landscape afterwards with patches of burnt/unburnt land across rolling hills for miles. I'll have to drive/fly out there and take some shots, its beautiful.
