Memorial Plaque

Postby loomex » Fri Aug 21, 2009 8:36 pm

I decided that I would put a little memorial plaque up at the site of a plane crash that happened in 2001.

Image

It reads
On August 24, 2001, about 0542, eastern daylight time, a Learjet 25, N153TW, operated by Ameristar Jet Charter, Inc., was destroyed when it crashed here while departing from the Tompkins County Airport (ITH), Ithaca, New York. This plaque was erected in memory of the two pilots that perished in the crash

Below the frame is a piece of the aircraft I found and screwed to the wood

I drive by the site almost every day and I just felt compelled to do it. I just emailed the company that owned the A/C and asked if they would forward the info of what I did to the families of the pilots.

You are most likely the only person outside the immediate families who even remembers these men. You have helped to preserve their memories. I read some of the report. These guys were not newbies in the type. Makes you go "Hmmm..."

I got an email from the company that owned the plane:

How thoughtful of you to remember Brian and Royce.  Thank you for
contacting us.  I am forwarding your information to both families today.

I helped work the accident and became rather close to the first
officer's family particularly.  In fact, there's a framed photo on my
desk his mother sent the Christmas after the accident.  It looks like an
ordinary nature scene to others but it is very dear to me and a daily
reminder of both those young men.  Could I trouble you to send a photo
of your memorial to me, as well?

Very kind regards,

A fine gesture, and it must feel good to know it's appreciated. Maybe the families could provide some photos of the crew to add to it... that would make it even better.
