Full Frame Lens on 30D

Postby a1 » Wed May 27, 2009 7:40 pm

As I understand the Canon 30D is not a full frame sensor camera but would an L series full frame lens work with the 30D and provide optimal quality? I am thinking that in the wide angle lenses the edges of the image would be distorted in some way in the 30D.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks

No personal experience, but I'll try and dig up some threads Ive seen on other forums.

From what I remember, I think you'll be just fine. As the reduced size of most sensors just chance the apparent magnification of the image, called Field of View Crop Factor. The 30D has a value of 1.6 so to find your 35mm equivalent (or full frame) multiply your lens mm by 1.6.

BAW's hit it on the head.....the quality of the image isn't affected in any way whatsoever.....the focal length is just multiplied by 1.6x (like cropping). For wide angle lenses this isn't a problem as manufacturers provide lengths ranging from circular fisheyes in the 5-10mm range all the way up to 1200mm.

Of course, some lenses distort on the edges anyway due to the quality of the build or design. If by distort you mean start to bend that can be expected below 18mm due to the wide angle nature of the lens. What you need to avoid is Vignetting (getting darker patches at the corners). However, if you buy an L lens I'm pretty sure that won't be an issue....

Thank you both. Very informative. Just getting an idea because in the near future I might get a better medium telephoto. :)

You wont have any issues with a medium telephoto, in fact that 1.6 is beneficial in telephoto lenses.

I so wish I could afford a L series

Actually, all top glas in the canonrange are EF-lenses, suited for both FF and crop-camera's. On cropcampera's you even get the "sweet" spot, as usually the center part of the image is the sharpest and hasn't any vignetting... Cropsensor's cut out a part of the image projected by the lens, keeping the best part on the sensor... :-)

Althoug I've heared that if you really want wide angle, nothing beats FF... 10-20 mm on a 5D should be amazing, so I'm told... :-)

Want distortion... get a Peleng fisheye lens
