I dunno, it was coming directly out of the exhaust and he was the only bird with any type of "smoke display" on while they flew (he flew with a Yak 3 and the two P-51's)

If you look carefully at shots 4 & 5 the smoke is coming from only one exhaust port on each side. That would seem to indicate an onboard smoke system for display purposes.
