A British Sunday...

Postby SteveH » Sun Apr 05, 2009 10:01 am

After my exertions covering a local non-league game yesterday it was nice to get back to covering simple Sunday League Football where there is no pressure on the photographer. As it turned out, I photographed two games, as the one I was watching was abandoned due to a serious injury early in the second half which required an ambulance to the pitch.

Man, man, man, these shots ROCK! The action freezed perfectly, nice compo's. Fantastic stuff...

Tell me, do you shoot for a paper? or webzine? or just for fun?

Still using the 300 L prime for this? I've recently bought a 70-200 f2.8 L and I'd love to take it to some sport events, but I'm afraid I'd lack the reach I need...

Kris, they're a mixture of 300 f4L and 80-200 f2.8L. 200mm is more than enough if you're just visitng a park game like this.

In terms of where my Sunday League images go, they're taken for the League. At the moment my shots are used free of charge as I build up a decent collection. However I am a registered photographer in the Conference North (hence my Blyth Spartans pics) so when I decide to start making the step up I'll be ready.

I hope you had a 2.8 to hand. I've covered some floodlit games at Blyth Spartans recently and even at f2.8 and using 1600 ISO (results are on the Flickr account linked in my sig) the speeds barely push 1/180th. It can still be done, but it requires a lot of patience and effort.

Daytime shooting has it's own challenges, but it's certainly preferable (although I'm still happy to cover mid-week games all the same).

Well, don't buy sigma is a tad overdone. I loved my 70-200 f2.8, though I have to agree she gets blown out of the water by my L-lens at f2.8...

But I'd still recommend her if the budget is a concern...

You'd understand the strength of my dislike if you saw the quality it turned out on some simple Tornado shots (no, I don't still have them, naturally)...
