XH558's finest hour

Postby SteveH » Thu Feb 12, 2009 2:17 pm

My commitments tonight have been wiped out by the weather, so I thought I'd get some more editing done.

I was lucky enough to be present at Waddington on Thursday 3rd July 2008 on the day XH558 arrived at the base for it's first public display that weekend. But at the start of the day it didn't look like it was going to happen as every ring Chief Engineer Andrew Edmondson (filling in the recovering Dr Pleming) received regular updates from Bruntingthorpe. Nerves were taut but finally, in the early evening XH558 arrived overhead to perform two practice displays in order to attain permission to perform over the weekend.

Awesome. Make the best of those memories though because it looks like it's all over for 558. :'(

I've had the pleasure of seeing both of those aircraft featured... One at camp at Waddington, the other at an airshow. No prizes for which is which.

Not often is it that pictures look as good as the real thing, but I think you've captured it very well indeed. Lovely shots.

A cracking set of pictures. Lets hope they are not the last you take of her :-?

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Thanks chaps.

I also was present for her first actual display at the Saturday show. Would have seen her Sunday too but she went U/S so a no go. That was it for me though, RIAT was a complete miss and I missed Leuchars and she was grounded there anyway. ::)

A great aircraft, it's just a shame she suffered from so many tech gremlins and chose perhaps the worst summer for weather the UK has seen for many years to make her return.
