Yeh, I think it was on ACC or somewhere but they mentioned it being reclassified... Something like being too heavy or too powerful to be a motor glider.

But for the time being I suppose it is going to be what it has always been. Thanks for the link Hagar.



Ouch, that sun looks painful from the video alone! Nice landing though. Does it ever bother you that you might wrongly calculate it and end up short, which in a glider doesn't really give you many options. I think for that alone I am happy inside motor powered aircraft... But would still love to give the Viking a go.

Yeah... the sun does make the landing quite interesting!

As for flying the Viking you just need to be a better pilot!  ;) 8-)
But if you just close the airbrakes when on approach you'll easily make it across the other side of the airfield... You just need to know your aircraft's limits and what it's capable of.

We had a group of spotters and photographers at the gate watching us for about 4 hours on Sunday! Were only gliders... Hardly interesting!  :P

Look at it this way: without wings, an engine won't help you much. With wings, an engine is not needed at all.

If you like to fly at all, you'd really love gliding. Typical intro flight keeps you well within gliding distance of "home plate" at all times, so the lack of power is never an issue (unless the approach goes terribly wrong, LOL). So quiet, great view, and the feel of a glider is just very different.

I have yet to see a gliding noob, whether a power pilot, nonpilot, or never-flown-at-all- before person, climb out after their intro flight and say "Good God, that was terrifying!! Never again!!!!"

They usually say "WOOHOO!! Let's do that again!!!"  ;D
