That's the one Ken, it's a great example of the two main effects of adjusting aperture. The first shows a wide open aperture which gives a very narrow depth of field, and allows a shorter shutter speed (relatively), while the second shows a much greater depth of field with focus extending right back along the ruler but requiring an exposure 4 times longer, and impossible to hand hold with the available light.

f4.6 - widest aperture, most light, shorter shutter speeds, smallest depth of field of focus

f22 - smallest aperture, least light, longer shutter speeds, greatest depth of field of focus

So for your model shots Andrew F22 would be much better to get all of the model sharp, but a tripod or beanbag and timer release of the shutter will be essential to remove camera shake.

ok, i've been having a hard time wrapping my head around this, but that makes sense

One extra feature I have available is a shutter delay, so that camera shake from the mirror flip, abates before the shutter curtains are activated.........a nice touch when used in conjunction with the timer, or wireless remote, to capture the image.......

It'll all come together Andrew...it only take time to learn and you've got lots of it........read all you can and ask as many questions as you can come up with.......there's no benefit to any of us, to keep things secret.....

So when taking photos, what kind of method do you use to choose what you want to set your aperture value to?

Andrew:
I really don't have any specific rules of thumb on how I shoot scenes.

In order to choose aperture, I need to think about ambient light level and shutter speed if there is motion to be dealt with. If there is no motion, I still need to decide upon using depth of field to either show interesting background detail or hide distractions which I may be unable to eliminate from my field of view due to focal length restriction/ability to move the camera location.......and then to assist in this decision, did I remember to bring along the tripod to allow me the full range of exposure values I might have a need to use ?

I know it sound a bit vague, but experience on my part makes it all a little easier..... 8-)

I have a question concerning tri-pods. Do all cameras and tri-pods have a standard mount, and are they all compatible?

Camera tri-pod mount is a standard 1/4-20 thread. I'll take a shot of the mount I use on my bike for shooting videos while I ride.

First off, Gorgeous sunsets Andrew!!!!!

Second, I do believe for the most part all cameras use the same tripod mount thread, as rifleman said.  I have two tripods that have the same mount and all three of my cameras fit the thread (one DSLR Sony, a Nikon point and shoot, and a Cannon point and shoot)

Did that book come in yet?  After reading all this helpful info everyone is posting you might not need it  ;D
