Is that lens fixed, meaning it can not zoom in at all?

This lens cannot "zoom" but it is zoomed to a set distance. ;)

Fixed, eh? What's the advantage of having a lens that has a fixed magnification?

Fixed lenses are sharper than any other as they are designed around one focal length. Zooms tend to have sweetspot and focal lenghts with less sharpness! These macrolenses also produce 1:1 magnification and can focus way closer than normal lenses.

If you even want to try a fixed focal just a bit of cash, look for the EF-50 f1.8. Then you can decide if you like these types of lenses or not.

In addition, a prime lens (fixed focal length, as you call it) will also allow a much greater max aperture.......f:1.8 is a fine lens for getting those low light level shots but remember, with a very wide aperture comes a very shallow depth of field, so focus point becomes very critical........ 8-)
