I agree with Ken, Try these same shots at different aperature settings, and see the difference in the shots.

Don't the aperture settings just make the picture darker or brighter?

I don't have a tripod that lets me get that close.

The Aperture setting controls the depth of Field, the smaller the setting ( higher number) the deeper the field of focus is, the larger the aperture (smaller number) the less that is in focus. I would say your pictures where taken at a low number, making the focus very small. try taking the same picture using f-16 then at f-2.8 or what ever your lens will go down to.  then compare the pictures and post them.

Sorta like this........notice the depth (foreground to background in focus) of field...

This was shot on a tri-pod with only the aperture being changed, although the shutter was looked after by the onboard light meter in Aperture Priority mode. " Av " on a Canon mode dial......
Don't let lack of a tri-pod deter you either. A bean bag can be used or a pillow, but some way of maintaining the camera in a steady position is really needed. Also, for shutter durations in excess of 1/30th of a sec without image stabilization, you should use the timer function to release the shutter for you.

My aperture setting only goes between F2.8 and F8.0.

But the idea is there....you at least have some measure of control....do some tests to see how both ends look from f8 to f2.8......you might be surprised at how you can affect the effect

Only a very subtle difference on my camera. I guess you just adapt it to whatever you're shooting. I noticed that one object looks better in F3 than F8, while another looks better in F6.
