Lens hood question

Postby machineman9 » Sat Dec 27, 2008 1:06 pm

With my Canon I got a 18-55mm lens as part of the kit. I am looking to get a lens hood for it.

Just been on Amazon, and the only thing I can see which they have (which seems to be what I am after) is this:

Canon EW-83J Lens Hood for EF-S 17-55mm

Now. That thing is 17-55mm, mine is 18-55mm. Would it still work? It's the right fitting (EF-S) but the sizes are different.

It should, shouldn't it? It doesn't matter about the first measurement does it? It is going on the end bit.

So can someone tell me if that will work with my lens?

Cheers

Hope you all had a good Christmas.

So will all EW60s work? Or is that just the sort of name for that one?

I was rather interested in the actual shape of the one I posted. Just looks like it might do more, if you get what I mean.

It should tell you the correct part number in the camera manual. I'm not familiar with the latest kit lens. If the end of the lens rotates when you zoom, the petal type hood will be no use as it will rotate with it.

I would assume mine be a standard one... Twist to zoom, then twist to focus.

Zoom only affects the middle part of the lens frame, the focus just the end section. So is that the older type?

And I will have a looksie in the manual.

Yep, EW60C is the lens hood type. But still doesn't quite make sense why others such as above wouldn't work.

Perhaps I'll take it down to Jessops and can try some out.

Does the end of the lens furthest from the camera rotate or slide in & out when you use the zoom ring? If it rotates then the petal type hood is no use to you.

Doug is (as usual) correct....

From your description the end of the lens rotates when focusing....as a result a petal shape lens is useless as it is designed to fit around the lens both at wide and telephoto ends.....if the hood rotates then it's not much use in that purpose and so a standard round one must be fitted....

I would suggest getting a standard, correctly sized rubber hood...they're exceedingly useful when shooting through glass and at night etc....;)

Here is a trick I use, when I want to know something like you just asked, I go to this web site, and find that lense, the accessories that fit that lense are listed below it. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5 ... _6_IS.html
