Urgent advice needed!

Postby AMDDDA » Tue Nov 11, 2008 7:18 pm

In time for the holiday season, could someone tell me what it means that the 75-300mm lens on this camera is not "IS" means for me.

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.as ... 83&topnav=

Also! Can I put my eye through the viewfinder and hold the camera button halfway on an SLR to autofocus?

I know the IS means image stabilization, but if I try to use the telephoto lens, will it be screwed if I'm sitting down and looking through the viewfinder?

If ya'll can find a better price on that camera, that'd be welcome, too :P.

Thanks!

You'd be spending a few more hundred dollars for something that, to me, doesn't make much of a difference. Even with a 100-400mm.

Yes.

Well, it comes included with it, and the normal lens is only 18-55mm, and our local airport doesn't like people getting too close to it, so I think I may need it.

You should be able to get some nice shots with the 75-300mm lens. I have a lens similar to that and have had no problems using it. The issue shows up in low light conditions and 98% of my shots do not even come close to that.

As long as you have a realitively steady hand, you should be fine. I shot with a Tamron 70-300 for about a year and had no problems with handheld at 300mm.

Canon lenses are nice. I've shot with the lens you're talking about, as well as my old Tamron 70-300, a Sigma 28-300. All are generally the same quality-wise. The only thing I noticed is that the Canon lens focuses a bit faster.

If it were up to me, I'd find a deal that just comes with the kit 18-55, and pick up a Sigma with the same range you need, and save a few bucks in the process, especially if it's your first lens (which I'm not sure if it is).

Hope this helped.

IS comes in handy when you are working at the long tele-end... if not just to calm the viewfinder... ever tried catching a plane at 300 mm... much easier with IS

The IS also help when you are shooting when light isn't as abundant anymore. You should use at least 1/focalpoint as shuttertime, but with IS this can be lower and still produce sharp images... Handy when it goes a bit grey out there...

Anyway... about the lens... set your budget first... because I think there are better options out there...

The EF 70-300 IS is a bit more expensive, but has a better quality to offer, it doesn't go soft at the long end as most prosumer 70-300 mm lenses do suffer from...

Less expensive and with very nice reviews, the EF-S 55-250 IS... it is stabilised and delivers very nice, sharp images...

Don't get me wrong, the Sigma's and Tamron's or older Canon's like the 75-300 can produce nice images too, but the lenses has more limites... Just so you'd know...

Don't just take my word for it...check www.photozone.de for reviews of about every lens ( in English) and look around internetforums to get a better view on whatever lens you are going to buy...

Cheers,

Omag

That's the same first telephoto I had, and once you get used to it you can get some corkers out of it...(don't go above 250mm though if you want anything resembling sharp :P )

Check the link in my sig....all piccies from 2007 were taken with that lens ;)

I have a 6 MP camera right now, and I have gotten it to the point where the difference is five dollars, so it doesn't matter that much.

Cheers, parents should be getting it for Christmas soon!
