Bug hunt.....

Postby 61_OTU » Wed Oct 01, 2008 5:11 pm

Hi folks, have posted these elsewhere but have only just got around to uploading them here.

Sunday before last the boys and I went for a stroll around Ellesmere, the largest natural lake in England outside of the Lake District. I got some kids in the park shots, and some geese shots, but then nearly had my eye taken out by one of these fellows.....

Cover your eyes children  :-[

They are, I believe, Common Hawker Dragonflies, and this chap was kind enough to predictably hover for 10-15 seconds, allowing me time to focus and shoot

This fellow was sunning himself on a reed

And was patient enough to wait while I move around

These were all taken at 400mm, and then cropped slightly. I had the ISO fairly high to keep the speed up while closing down the aperture to increase the depth of field.

These are amazing shots. I love the ones that are in flight.

I have always tried to catch them and add them to my collection and I woul djust pull my hair out because of the difficulty. I wouldn't imagine ow hard it would be to take pictures of them in flight. :o

Holy cow! Now that's nature photography!

Great skill to pull that kind of photo's off on 400 mm!

Number 2 is amazing, but so are the others. Great clarity and sharpness.  :)

Thanks for the feedback chaps. I've not had much of a chance for airshows this year, so opportunities like this have been golden to me.

I've done a bit of portrait/studio photography the last couple of months, and we have a job providing the school photos for our local school. I'm looking forward to testing myself and seeing if I can come up with anything that people want to pay for  ;)

Here's Eliot in a test shot

And one of Jake too
