Had a few days off...

Postby TSC. » Fri Sep 26, 2008 3:27 pm

So I've popped up to visit the old parents & have a gander around where I was born.

Mum & dad live about 300 metres from the front at Highcliffe, so it's nice to be able to bring my bike with me & shoot the coastal paths for a while:

A really poor picture this, but I've included it as the ship is 'The Waverley', which is the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world. It was cruising back to Bournemouth:

Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, & no, I didn't go up it - the elevator goes up the outside - no thanks:

That pic reminds me that I missed a scoop last week. The Waverley damaged Worthing Pier when it came in to pick up passengers. First I heard of it was when I saw this article in the local rag. http://www.worthingherald.co.uk/worthing/It39s-not-all-aboard-as.4494625.jp

There's an internal lift. I didn't know they got the exterior one operational. It wasn't working when I visited last year.

Ah, you could well be right Doug, I just saw the gubbins for the external lift & thought 'b****cks to that!'.  :o

The external lift got stuck on the day it was opened back in 2005. The project manager & a couple of executives were trapped inside it half-way up. Terribly embarrassing. To the best of my knowledge it hasn't worked since.

We went up the internal lift when we visited. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent value for just over a fiver. Come to think of it I never did post any photos of that trip.

Good morning TSC   :)

Just a quick question.
Are they stones that are laying all over the beach and if so why do they not move them, put them in a pile so that the beach is free of obstrutions.
Does the tide wash the sand back in to cover them?
I think that by moving them would make more sense either way.

Thanks for the shots.    :)

Good afternoon Doug,

I think the stones are left as a breakwater, along with the stone groins to help protect the beach from the effects of longshore drift. The sand doesn't wash back in to cover them, but they are almost covered at high-tide.
