Kemble Open Day - Preview

Postby Mictheslik » Sun Sep 14, 2008 2:46 pm

I'm so glad the Great Vintage Flying Weekend has been saved. It was wonderful to have 6 or 7 aircraft in the circuit at times despite the misty weather. We even had an interesting simultaneous approach onto the grass and concrete by a Pembroke and a Cub :)

The static Red Arrows Gnat that lives next to the tower. It's to commemorate the years that the Red Arrows spent based at Kemble.

Kemble's Tower......

And the view from the top.....had a lovely tour from one of the controllers :) note the dragon rapide landing  8-) 8-)
Image

The line up of the airpark which had stayed overnight taken from the tower.....sonn afterwards (after the fog had lifted) it filled up rapidly.
Image

Where the controller lives.....managed to get an idea of everything that was coming in thanks to the board mechanism they use :)
Image

The AA DC3 put in a uh hum *spirited* performance yet again.....this hasn't been rotated or cropped in any way ;) After the CAA investigation for the crowd violation during Abingdon I dread to think what's going to happen now.....but it was a sight to behold  8-)
Image

A friendly atmosphere all round....Peter Holloway waves to the small crowd as he taxies back to the ramp.

Cloudy was nicer....meant I wasn't shooting into direct sunlight ;)

We also got a bit more flying.....for once the BBMF was quite close to the crowd  :o

Did the piston and jet provost join up yesterday?

Nice looking venue! Getting in the tower must be pretty impressive, even if it's a smaller airfield...

Looks like the pilot of the DC-3 had a bit of trouble with his passengers... turbulence? Turbulence? I'll show you REAL turbulence!

Did he perform a whole roll?  :o

He came straight towards the crowd, pulled into a near vertical before banking to the starboard, overflying the crowd and getting pretty close to the inverted......( a little closer than the DoBAF B25 ;) )

:P

You're right there. It was a waste of time trying to take photos of the display yesterday. Kemble is like a lot of ex-RAF stations in that respect.

We had solo displays by the Delta Jets Hunter T.7 & Jet Provost. Unfortunately PH's Stieglitz went US so didn't take part. They worked on it & he flew it out after the show. The Twister did a nice little spot.

PS. Why is that chap in the tower wearing a hi-vis jacket? ::)

So the pilots can see the tower  ;D :P ::)

He was one of the guys giving tours so I guess they're easier for the public to recognise wearing those things....
