Peregrines

Postby Hagar » Mon Sep 08, 2008 6:14 pm

Been going through some photos I've taken this year. These were taken in June. Not sure why I didn't post them at the time.

This is Chichester Cathedral. A pair of Peregrine Falcons has been nesting in one of the towers on the spire for several years now.
They return every year to breed & raise their chicks. The RSPB has a webcam up there with a spotting centre set up in the grounds.
They had four chicks this year & on the day I visited they had been learning to fly for only a few days.
Image

The nesting box is in the corner tower in the foreground. You can see the camera cable if you look carefully. There are also two Peregrine Falcons in the photo. Bet you can't spot them.
Image

How about now? The lower one is the male adult with one of the four chicks sitting above.
Image

Here's two of the chicks learning the art of flying. They're getting quite good at it already.
Image

Probably the best shot I got all day happened by pure accident. I was focussed on the one on the left & the other one flew into frame just as I pressed the shutter.
Image

Isn't nature wonderful? The birds have long since departed but I shall return next year in the hope of getting some better photos.

Peregrines are beautiful birds, don't have too many around me but there are a few in the city of of Charlotte. We do have Red Tailed Hawks and Bald Eagles around. Awhile back I was taking our canoe out and a Bald Eagle swooped down and caught a fish right beside the canoe, nearly fell out but it was very cool. ;D

Thanks for the kind words. I intended posting this in the Photos forum but perhaps it will get more views here. :-/

Thanks commoner. I've seen the photos on your website & assumed you already have a digital camera.

The first shot of the cathedral was taken with my little Fuji A820 which I carry in my shirt pocket. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fuji-Finepix-A820-Digital-Camera/dp/B000NOUP12
I got it in town for

Doug, that last shot is just amazing! What a catch!

Judging by that last shot, they had you in there eyesight too, and they didn't need a big lens!  ;D  ;)  8-)
