1.480 spinechilling BHP's

Postby Omag 2.0 » Sat Aug 09, 2008 12:45 pm

Loud, noisy, smokey and bound to make a certain member drool!

Ok Lads, lets make some noise...

Throttling up...

Ah, if only it had wings and some guns...

A restored RR Merlin XX reving up to full power.... This one was salvaged from a crashed Bristol Beaufighter II ( R2335 to be precise), restored to working order in honour of the fallen WWII pilots...

Ok, I know it was never used in a Spitfire, but still, the sound made me run towards the stand. Like music in the ears...

Taken at Wings & Wheels 2008 - Ursel

More shots to come, soon...

Cheers,

Omag

Gorgeous!  :)

Is this engine bound for any restorations? Or will it stay aircraft-less?

As Kris says, it was salvaged from a crash site. I suspect that combined with a lack of engineering paperwork would keep it firmly ground-bound.

It is displayed in between Pink Lady (B-17) and Old Crow (P-51). It probably belongs to the same collection, but I didn't find out more about it's owners...

Sadly the only thing moving ( just static show), but I'm hoping to cath the departures tomorrow...

That's a thought. I'll have to borrow an engine from work this fall*. :)

Saw this chap at Duxford a few years ago. He was with another who had a RR Griffin, complete with cut down props. Unfortunately the Griffon would not start, even when jumped started by the Merlin. Shame I would have liked to have seen a contrarotating engine up close and personal. The crowd that gathered to watch, well a few pilots that where taxing about at the time must have been a bit miffed at the loss of attention ;D

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Angle that prop toward the ground and it might just be able to cut my grass... with a few more Horsepower

I reckon he must have that prop well and truly "Feathered"...

I don't think those little Chocks would prevent him from being suddenly and rapidly propelled forward if it went into "Coarse" pitch at full throttle..... ;D...!

My Motor-Bike's engine makes a deafening noise in my ears, even with my Ear-plugs stuffed in them, (essential), so how that Bloke copes with the sound of that engine with straight-through exhaust pipes, even wearing ear-defenders, I don't know!... A very wide frequency range!...:o...!

...I wonder if it would fit in my Bike?....Image.... ;D...!

Paul....Beep-beep... 8-)...!

Fantastic Photos. Saved them in my Photo Album...;)...!
