Vintage glider rally 2

Postby Hagar » Sat Jul 26, 2008 3:51 am

The event was well-supported with a good selection of vintage classics. I've only seen some types in photos before today. Unfortunately the strong gusty wind prevented us seeing some of them in the air.

A nice EoN Olympia being assembled. It's listed as an Olympia 1 although that apparently didn't have a wheel.

The same one landing some time later. Based on the German Meise thie Olympia was the first high-performance sailplane to be built in England after WWII. The Meise was originally designed to take part in the 1940 Olympics. Elliotts of Newbury had built 100 Olympias by 1947.

A later Olympia, the AP-10 EoN 460 Srs.1. Built in the 1960s. I can't find much info on this one. Only one spoiler appeared to be working but he had no trouble landing.

More German designs. The Schleicher Ka.6 CR. A popular single-seat Standard Class sailplane first flown in 1955.

The club's Schleicher ASK-18. First flown in 1974 this was the last Schleicher glider to use traditional construction methods with a fabric-covered steel tube fuselage & wooden wings

A rare example of the Carden Baynes Scud III (1935 vintage) in immaculate condition. The owner showed me the plans for the motorised "Auxiliary" version with a retractable 249 cc Villiers motorcycle engine mounted in the top of the fuselage driving a pusher prop. Sadly I didn't get any good shots of this one in flight.

The PZL Bielsko SZD-22B Mucha Standard. Designed for the 1958 World Championships in Poland it first flew in February of that year. It took first place in the Standard class.

I'll post a selection of Slingsby types later.

Very nice set!!  I have to make it to a similar meet here in the US, now that I've acquired a taste for these things.
