Name this plane...

Postby Aerophile » Sat Oct 06, 2007 8:41 am

I flew over to Abilene, Texas yesterday with a fellow instructor so he could take his multi-engine instructor checkride.  While he was out doing his ride, I was hanging out in the pilot's lounge when I heard this airplane taxi onto the ramp.  I spoke to the pilot who said this was it's first flight since 1996.  Lets have some fun and see if you aircraft recognition whizzes can guess what it is.  My guess is someone will get it right within 3 posts.

I have never even heard of one until yesterday.  Pretty interesting looking bird.  The pilot said, as I mentioned earlier, that this was this was this airplane's first flight in 11 years.  It's VFR certified only, so they can only cruise below 18,000 feet.  I bet they burn a lot of gas flying that low.  He also said it is capable of flying up to 36,000 feet.

Shiny and gorgeous version of the Magister Fouga...

They retired from active duty in the Belgian army in September.

I managed to catch one of the last times they flew during the wings & wheels event in Ursel. They make a nice whistling sound, very distinctive. It always takes me back to my childhood-days ( late 70's early 80's), when flew over my school on a regular basis...

Good shots BTW.  ;)

For you guys in the states, there is a place in New Mexico you can go and get an hour for just only 1,300 bucks or so.  :o That's about a little less than a months pay for me.  Its only 1,250 bucks an hour though if you buy more than one hour.   ;)  ;D
