Old Warden Military Pageant

Postby Hagar » Mon Jun 04, 2007 2:54 am

You've seen Craig's photos from Old Warden yesterday. It was one of those classic air displays that could only happen at this wonderful place. It more than made up for my disappointment at Biggin Hill the previous day.

This was a rare formation of Royal Navy vintage types. There were 5 in all but it was a bit straggly. Forgivable as I think this is the first time these aircraft have flown together. Unfortunately the planned RNHF Sea Fury didn't make it. "Went tech" as the saying goes. Probably stuck at Biggin. It would have been nice to see the Sea Hawk & Swordfish as well. I'm not sure they could have flown slow enough for the latter.

The formation split for excellent individual displays. A rare chance to get a close look at these aircraft in the air.

First the Kennet Aviation Seafire Mk.XVII. What more can I say.

Last minute replacement for the Sea Fury. Kennet Aviation's Douglas AD-4NA Skyraider. The AEW version served with the RN.

The resident Sea Hurricane. One of my favourites. Beautiful.

Two from the Fighter Collection at Duxford. Lovely little Wildcat puts on a spirited display. I really like this stubby little fighter. It's painted as a RN Martlet.
Image

The FG1D Corsair. Painted as KD345 of 1850 Sqn based on HMS Vengeance of the British Pacific Fleet in December of 1945.

Finally two examples that served with the Royal Navy in WWI. Both in authentic RNAS markings. The Shuttleworth Collection's Sopwith Pup

and Sopwith Triplane.

A fine tribute to the Royal Navy.
