I think you'll find it was a VW Beetle that was converted into a Dune Buggy. Very popular in California ;)

Classic Cali-style Volkswagen sand rail/street rod...they're still cool.  ;D

Indeed it is a classic, I remember removing the body and  cutting 14.25 inches out of a standard Beetle, to make a similar one in high school....this one is the classic "Dune Buggy" though....... 8)

Nice!! :)   I remember having a Cox gas engine Dune Buggy when I was a kid!! ;D

For a seventies-car, I'd say this one looks in quite a good shape! I hope the Dakar logo is just for decoration...

Yup, and still very cool I think when they are executed (as in built/prepped) as nicely as that one there.
