Ben Nevis Trip

Postby igs942 » Wed May 24, 2006 4:01 am

Well, we thought it might be fun to climb Ben Nevis. My Parents climbed it about 30 years ago and they reckoned they did it in 7 hours up and down so this was the time to beat. Drove up from Oxford last Friday, climbed it Saturday.

9:40 Just leaving the car, looking up at the Nevis range. This shot is not of Ben Nevis itself, but the mountain next to it. Low cloud suggested the view at the top would be less that promising. Oh well.

10:15 Roughly 400 meters up, nice view.
Image

10:30 The Loch just under half-way up. Just about to hit the cloud.
Image

12:15 Just under the 1000 meter mark. Cloud beginning to break up, revealing better views.
Image

12:45 In the cloud now as you can see (and the snow!). The friends we went with had done this climb many times before and they went off ahead which was a bit worrying because the paths were covered and there are some nasty overhangs disguised with snow here.
Image

13:00 Made it! :D Half an hour for lunch and then back down again.
Image

What's frightening is the fact that, although the summit looks quite flat overall, if you walk to the left you see dangerous overhangs and you can see why the mountain claims lives each year.

14:30 The Loch on the way down. Now the clouds have lifted.

We got back to the car at 16:30, overall 6.5 hours.

My legs hurt :'(

Bad luck on the weather. On a clear day the view is spectacular 8)

The weather turns bad every time I go somewhere where there is meant to be a really nice view, just for that day. In March I went to Paris. Blue skies all through the weekend apart from Sunday - and what day d'ya think I planned to go up the Eiffel Tower?? And this weekend just gone we went up the mountain on the Saturday however these were taken the day we left (Sunday)...

The first shot is of the same mountain in #1 in my first post. The second shot is of Ben Nevis.
