Cottesmore Work Experience

Postby EGNX » Sun Apr 16, 2006 6:43 am

Just a few random pics from my work experience at RAF Cottesmore. This pics are quite old, but i have only recently been able to upload them from my mobile phone. Sorry for quality, Mobile phones arnt exactly the best for taking photos.

First Day (Monday): Very excitied ;D, Started work by checking the fan blades on the harrier for chips or cracks. Then went on to drink X amount of teas in the crew room and watch Discovery wings until the harriers came home from their morning sortie. Ready for me to refuel them. ;D
Image

Tuesday: After learning the basics on the Flight Line, such as refueling and ground movement of aircraft i was given the task to progam the current co-ordinates into the flight computer.  8)
Image

Wednesday: Got up close to the harriers with their engines roaring, (very exhilerating!) I then had to run to nose wheel and pull out the chocks. I was then told that i was going to be guiding the planes out for taxi. (Waving my arms about telling them where to go... etc)
Image

Thursday: Just snapped a pic of a Spitfire inside the 1 Squadron hanger. I didn't want to get too close because it was giving of radiation or something.  ???

Friday: USAF C17 just popped into say hello bringing with it a bunch of Ex USAF WWII Pilots for a remeberance cermemony and airshow on Saturday. (Anyone who lives in the Midlands may remeber this being on the news in May of last year) I also had the chance to have a look in the c17's cokpit, so i hitched a ride down to Visiting Aircraft Squadron where the C17 was parked up but sadly it was just about to leave for RAF Wittering so i only got to see taxi and take off.  :'(
I took this pic just as the C17 was starting to reverse thrust and taxi backwards up the runway because he missed the taxi way, which was a fantastic site!
Image
This was the reason why i didnt get the chance to get to see the C17 cockpit. I was waiting to see the harries do some formation flying practice for the airshow, and they were late  >:(.
Image
and finally just i pic of hawk that was visiting.
Image

Cant wait to go again when i do my second work experience in a years time! And for any young members out there who are wanting to join the RAF and havent decided what they are doing for their work experience i urge you to ask your teachers about going to your local RAF base, cause i had a fantastic time!!!

Radiation warning on the spitfire is probably the gauges being treated with that glowing green stuff.
Only thing they need that sign for is to keep the lawyers away.

Miffed that I wasn't able to my work experience at an RAF base. The fact my nearest (proper) base is 60 miles away  obstructed any hope I had.
Certainly quite an experience.
