Brooklyn Bridge, etc- part 3

Postby beaky » Sat Feb 25, 2006 1:40 pm

By popular demand, some more pix of the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge:
There's a series of plaques at the midway point, depicting the history of its construction. My favorite shows an interesting event which occurred just after the first cables were strung across between the two towers:

"In 1876, at nearly 60 years old, Master Mechanic E.F. Farrington was the first to ride a cable the length of the bridge, to the uproarious cheers of thousands of spectators."

Somebody mentioned the view of the Empire State Building; her's an interesting view, including sort of a "cross-section" of Manhattan, from the FDR on the East river to the top of the ESB.

Looking up at one of the towers:

Another virew: much of the steel has been replaced, but it all still retains the original design.

A bonus: Bell JetRanger making its way to the heliport near Wall Street.

Next: a walk around the Battery

What an amazing structure! The bridgeheads look so massive! Quite a accomplishment when you think of the time it was build!

And yet, when it's put next to the George Washington Bridge or the Tappan Zee or the Verazano, it's so small. But so cool :)

I was the one that mentioned the ESB. You get me in the mood of posting NYC photos. Here's also one with the ESB as seen from the Brooklyn Bridge.

Great Shots!!!

Remember I own the bridge.  Some nice gentleman sold it to me the last time I was in New York.  I have the deed to prove it.  ;D

Hmmm... your deed must be phony. I bought the bridge fair and square years ago, from a talking rabbit.
