A few of the house my class is building.

As some of you might have read before...I am taking a Building Trades course at vocational school.  I go there in the morning and then to normal highschool classes in the afternoon.  We build a house from the ground up and move in ready 8)  I love it personaly.  Gives a nice touch to the day insted of sitting in a desk those 3 hours.

Its a 1/2 2 story, 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom, full basement, and a 2 car attached garage.

All we started with on August 17th was the concreate basement...Over the past 2 months 16 of us working 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, have turned it into this...

These first 3 were taken around noon today...Beautiful day to be out working.

From the front it at first seems a little small.  The roof is not overly steep but its not as flat as it appears from this angle.  The dormer will have a large curved window in it.  Behind the paper theres a big hole, just ran out of time to cut it out :P
Image
The right side...Had to keep backing up for this one.  The second story is only over the back half.  Main roof is now finished all but the peak, wont take to long to shingle the garage and the little middle section.
Image
Quick view from the inside.  Came in from the garage.  Not much to look at right now.  Just a skeleton with a few of the supports still in place.  The hole is the basement stairs...the ones to the second floor will go right above them...when we dont know...It would be nice to have them insted of climbing through the rafters...we tried to tell our instructor we are not a bunch of monkeys...though there is a couple of people who might be in question ::)
Image

These last three were taken Friday...It was cold, wet, and misserable to be roofing :-/

From the far, back corner of the garage roof.  I was taking a little stretch break after 2 strait hours of shingling the front.
Image
To give an idea of what kind of location this place is located...Turned around...cant see much through the fog but on a clear day like today you can see for about 5 miles across the fields.
Image
Moved to the front left corner of the house for this one.  Under certain lighting conditions this would make for a stunning painting...Though with a cammera distant objects always appear much smaller then they are.
Image

So far I have had 2 falls off the garage roof from people not paying attention...1 ladder slid sideways with me on it...And the fun a week ago when that long front roof was just the plywood sheeting, a couple of us sat on our hard hats and slid from the top clear down and off to the ground.  Landings hurt a little but made for a fun ride :P

Still have a long ways to go...next will be the windows and doors, then some of the siding and the brick work on the chimney.  After the snow starts falling we will start on the inside wiring, plumbing, insulation, and drywall.

I will try to take a set of shots every few weeks.  Will see just how some of the different stages go ;)

18 and a senior.  Wish i could have went to vocational freshman year...Its rare they will allow anyone but juniors and seniors to go from our area...But...our vocational school also hosts 9 different area schools...barely enough openings for the juniors...2/3 that sign up do not get in.  I was lucky last year :-/

Also i forgot to mention above...That green house in the first picture will not be there long...we get to turn into the demo crew next spring and tear it down ;)

lol...this ones taken...so if your interested join the waiting list and you might get a house in 5-6 years ::)

You might ask "why the hell would someone wait 5-6 years to get a house built"...Well consider this...The only thing the home owners must pay is the material cost...thats right...JUST the material cost :o  No labor or anything...unless they do like most and bring us donuts and drinks once in awhile ;)  I guess last year the home owners accualy gave the crew christmas presents :)

So you could save around $25000 on a home if you let the vocational build it...We get the experience and they get the free labor 8)  Sure there is a few minor mistakes and that happens...But i think i could deal with a little unoticeable mistakes over the extra 20 grand or so in cost.

And our vocational offers several programs...medical, auto, electronics, cosmotology, agriculture, graphics design (which i took last year) and a couple of others...if only they offered aviation...I think they would find more people interested in it then they think :-X

Awsome, that's what I do during the summer and boy do I miss it while trying to wrap my head around calculus, but come winter break, I'll have three whole weeks to do some framing.

In the third shot, what type of header is that on the far left?  I've never seen one like that, we usually use 2x10's or microlams on exterior walls or doors with a bigger span like that one is (I assume).

Another one (sorry I love building houses too  ;D ;D)  It doesn't look like you guys used foam on the outside under the Tyvek, is there just fiberglass inside for insulation?

Sorry again, but this is interesting to me and since I have been away from it for almost a month and a half now, I really miss it. :) ;)

Looking good. Makes me miss my days earning my daily bread swinging a hammer... but I'd rather have a nail gun.

Very interesting & that looks like a nice house. The countryside looks a tad flat though. Not sure it would suit me. I don't know where this actually is but it shows the difference between a typical house in the US & the UK. There are a few houses constructed from wood over here these days but these would usually be faced with brick or tiles. Most houses in the UK are traditionally built from bricks (or stone) & mortar with a tiled roof. Timber (lumber) tends to be expensive in the UK but as I noticed during my visits you seem to have plenty of trees in the US. ;)

Not sure if theres a specific name for this header type or not Mobius ;)  There are 3 of those throughout the house.  They really are just a bunch of 2x4s glued together.  Cant say ive ever saw one till these eather :-[

Not to sure on if there is a difference between Tyvek and Typar...The Typar is made up of the fiberglass.  There will be plenty of inside insulation to go around though.

Its location is just south of my hometown.  The flatness is only because of the fields.  My old house is around 10 miles from it and the landscape is anything but flat...and we were surrounded by trees ;)  But then again most of Indiana is a field ::)
