A little remodeling

Postby beaky » Mon Oct 03, 2005 6:52 am

Got ahold of some free carpeting and padding the other day; hardly used and pretty good quality. Some went to Lyell's place in Asbury Park, but we brought a big piece to the loft to adress this horror:
The old carpeting on the living room "platform"...
Between the dog, the eating in the living room, and the parties, it's... well... yuck.

Image

So Maz and I had at it: first we happily stripped off the old carpeting, which was just laying on this arrangement of Depression-era shipping pallets that Lyell, Steve Z. and I found here years ago and set up here so one could better look out the windows when seated. I made the mistake of trying to better arrange them...  each pallet is a different size... cut one of them down- that helped. Also finally toenailed them together, something we meant to do about 8 years ago, but never got around to it.

Image

The hunk of carpet is almost a perfect fit!

Image

The big "after" shot: much better, if not perfect. Not stretched; just tack a little around the edges. Bad enough i spent almost a whole day futzing with this; I'll be damned if I'm going to do it properly..    ;) ;D. Just not worth it.... just shimming the pallets a little to make them more co-planar was a big pain in the butt; to properly install the carpet, we might as well just build a new platform first... and as there's no free lumber around... voila.

Image

Fascinating, huh?
;D

Indeed. You live a very fascinating lifestyle. Thanks for sharing part of it with us more conventional mortals. ;)

I've been meaning to do a proper photo tour of my home, but it's so crammed with junk right now... maybe when we clean up for the big Halloween party I'll take pix of every part of it and post enough to give a clear impression.
Could be a lot of shots, 'cuz it's HUGE... 15,000 sq. ft., laid out like the letter "E".
Was thumbing thru an old copy of the Guiness Book of world records recently, and according to that (ca. 1990-something), our place is over half the sq. footage of the largest residential dwelling in the world (25,000; some pasha's palace or other). The place was a factory originally so it doesn't really count, but it's fun to think of it that way.

I doubt you'll be gettting pallets like these anymore... they're serious stuff. Some are made with yellow pine; very nice lumber for pallets; the planks are 5/4" x 6-8" and the skids are 3x6 or whatever... very heavy-duty.
But I have been thinking about making a platform for my room (wood floor is damaged along the windows) lately... sure; if you bring me a few dozen, I'll take 'em...

Huh. there's a goodly amount of that, and dirty dishes, etc. Call me a wet blanket, but i'm sick of it. i'll make a big mess, but then clean it up afterwards. The fly situation got out-of-had around here a few times this summer, with some people leaving food-y dishes around, etc.  Who needs that?
I'm hardly a neat freak ( found a dead mouse in my dirty dishes once when I was living solo- top that if you can!) But one thing that makes me angry is cleaning up somebody else's mess- such as having to wash a sinkload of dirty dishes just so I can rinse out Peg's water bowl.  And whoever keeps trimming his hair in the shower and leaving it there is gonna eat one of those furballs some day real soon.... >:(
And maybe I'm getting old, but I just don't  enjoy stepping around other people's dirty socks and being the only one to replace light bulbs, etc.
My room? Usually horrifying- but I keep my mess confined to that area.
All of us here are just a wee bit too old to be living like frat boys... thank God Lyell just asked our latest newbie lodger to hit the bricks for non-payment of rent; his adorable habits including bringing uncouth hookers home  and leaving his toenail clippings on the floor in the living room ( hey, we've all done it, but clean up afterwards, for cryin' out loud! That goes for the toenail clippings, too... ;D). Other than that, a real nice guy...LOL!!
There have been a few hardy ladies living here on and off, and it's always a little better when they're around... not so much to do the housekeeping (although they sure seem to like to tidy up, God bless 'em, even just for their own sake), but to sort of inspire the men to be a little more conscientious. Hasn't been the same since Faith, our sweet, funny schoolmarm, moved out this summer- she's a Baton Rouge girl and will get up in people's faces... and Lyell's always down at her house in Asbury Park, so she's not around much to  "ahem" people into action.... too much manly apathy around here lately.
"Wanted: female roommate; must like dogs and refrigerator science experiments..."
Seriously, there's a room free again...
;D

Rotty I always love seeing pics of your place, I find it fascinating (in a really cool way).

Is that 'Stonehenge coffee table' made out of three huge peices of stone??

Cheers,

LOL Reminds me of the Flintstones. The bare feet complete the picture. ;D
