The Photoshop Challenge...

Postby Wing Nut » Mon Sep 26, 2005 3:00 am

Every once in a while, I get a bee in my bonnet and like to spend the evening playing with Photoshop to see how good I really am.  I also like to see how good everyone else is too...  ;D  We've done this before, but not for a while, and not with such cool subject matter.  I have the original scan available, if you want a higher resolution to work with.

So, the challenge is to take this pic from my personal collection of WWII pictures and see how you can improve it and neaten it up a bit.

Good luck and may the force be with you!  ;D

Let's post the replies in a separate thread, so it doesn't get too big here...  ;D

I'm not very good with any graphics editor but here's a question for someone who is.

It seems like brightening the image might bring out detail in the dark area at the bottom but wash out other areas.  Would it be possible to break the photo into sections like the dark area at the bottom and the driver and enhance those areas separately?

A better way to do it is to see if your program has a Gamma feature in it.  This will actually change the exposure of the shot to something more reasonable.  I run Photoshop CS and Imageready, and Photoshop does not have it, while Imageready (also by Adobe) does...

Failing that, you can select the area you want in most programs and change the settings for that particular area...

Her's a quick attempt with the GIMP, just using Contrast/Brightness and a little sharpening:

Image

The problem with this image is that the top part is way more exposed than the bottom. so I adjusted it in sections: the fender down, then the turret, then the subject... all so he wouldn't be so washed-out.
Didn't have much luck with the gamma adjustment, but that's still new to me...
Looking again, I see I over-sharpened him a little, and probably should've airbrushed the edge between him and the sky...
but not bad for about 5 minutes' work... ;D

Here's my attempt. I've brightened the lower half of the tank, and darkened part of the upper half and the chap inside! Also, I've quite successfully removed a few of the major scratches on the photo (theres quite a big scratch running from left to right)
