ORA pix continue: Fokker Dr1!!

Postby beaky » Thu Aug 04, 2005 6:34 pm

There used to be an older Palen-built Triplane replica with an ancient Gnome rotary flying at ORA, but I think it's retired. This is one he bought in Florida in 1987; flew it all the way to ORA, and the whole way home he was astounded by how strong the slipstream was- kept blasting his goggles loose. When he got it to its new home, he finally realized the seat was adjustable!!!  :D
Anyway, there are no original Dr1s flying anymore, and this one doesn't even have a rotary engine. It's a much newer Continental radial. but she's well-made and flies great. Got some nice close-ups of this one as they took her off the flight line and waited a bit before putting her away...

Gotta say this thing is almost comical on the ground... sort of waddles.

A more dignified taxi shot; she's cleared that first hump in the runway.

The Black Baron of Old Rhinebeck takes to the air... this plane becomes something completely different in flight. Amazing. I t can maneuver as well as the original... wish I had some good shots of that.

Very pretty. I didn't realise that was a radial.

We had a couple of similar Dr.1 replicas on the circuit until a couple of years ago. A black one & a red one. Not sure which now but one of them crashed, killing the pilot I believe. Haven't seen the other one since.

Robin Bowes was killed flying the Red one - I think it was 1995. The black ones been about since, but is seen rarely, and I personally haven't seen it for 4 or 5 years.

Anyway, there are no original Dr1s flying anymore

Sadly, since the retirement in 2003 of the RAF Museums LVG C.VI at the Shuttleworth Collection, where it was on loan, there have been no original WWI German aircraft flying...
