A new approach

Postby Hagar » Sat Jul 24, 2004 11:09 am

I went back to one of my old haunts this morning. There's some old WWII gun emplacements on the river bank alongside the airport that we used as our spotting HQ when I was a lad. One is right on the approach when the wind is in the right direction. It's a tad more delapidated now but after finding it I decided to hang around & see what turned up. With a little luck it's ideal for some close-up aerial shots. The grass runways aren't used much since the hard runway was built but some of the lighter types use them when the wind is  blowing from certain directions. As there was a fairly strong wind today Runway 25 was in regular use.

Beautifully done Sir. He's obviously done this before. ;)

This approach over the river can be a tad tricky as I know from when I used to fly here myself. You can suddenly drop several feet when over the water depending on the state of the tide & the air currents can throw you off-course & mess up that nice landing. We always noticed that strangers usually come in higher than the regulars just in case. This chap came in a tad low & had to apply power to maintain altitude.

The wind changed after about 45 minutes but it was quite busy there for a while. Think I've reached the limit so I'll post a few more in another thread.
