The wings are bent way to high in that screenshot. Look at this site: http://newairplane.com/ and click on launch 787 dreamliner site. Let it load and watch the plane outside the terminal. It looks like the wingtips don't stick out above the fuselage...

God I hate Boeing's sugar-coated advertising on this one. Its a tube with wings, just like any other modern airliner. On the other hand, Boeing seems to think we'll fall for the 'new, exciting and fresh!' approach. Call me a cynical b*stard, but I'm sick enough of their patronising us that I want to walk into their manufacturing plant carrying a chainsaw... You can probably see where this is going. ;)

Yep, just a slightly different shape with modern (oh, what a surprise) systems, engines and construction techniques. Nothing over exciting really. It's just a shame the industry has become a transatlantic slaggin match between two behemoths...

You're totally missing it.  Granted, at this point in time, you can only innovate the tube with wings design but only so much.  Notwithstandign avionics, the biggest advances right now are engines and materials/construction techniques.  How can you make that tube with wings lighter, stronger, and how can you build propulsion that's more efficient and quieter.  Considering how much composite is going into the construction of the airframe, it is 'new, exciting, and fresh'.

spitfire boy is quite correct. The 'average Joe' rarely has a choice of the type of aircraft he flies on. The airlines are the ones you have to convince.

I guess... but with correct marketting on telivision the 787 may attract passengers.

I guess I am not average joe. But I payed extra to go on a 717... :P Much better plane than those terrible 737's and A320's.... :P

I know a lot of non-aviation enthusiasts who know a lot about aircraft generally. A lot of people would tell you that the A380 is the biggest airplane in the world. As for the average joe not caring, I doubt that very much. If an airline (say Qantas for example) starts advertising that their brand new 787's will have (the list of things . . .), they would attract passengers. Even if most do not know that its a 787, they will still have that image associated with the airline.

But isnt Boeing advertising to the airlines about all of the new dreamliners features? Honestly I think they would know that any passenger wouldn't notice if their plane is more fuel efficient, so aren't they advertising for airlines to buy their product? Also Ive seen Boeing advertise on the Military Channel, so I think they know what their doing with advertising. Why I say this is because you would think many X-pilots (who may have gone into the business end of aircraft) would watch the military channel for its shows on aircraft, and Boeing would be able to slip in its advertisement then. Maybe thats completely not true... but It came to my mind.

It seems to me that Boeing is advertising two ways. One, its advertising all of the features of the plane as far as flying goes for the airlines, and Two, it seems as if their advertising all of the cabin features to the average Joe. Honestly though I think Boeing may be wasting their money to advertise to the passengers... because as others said, they have no choice as to which plane they go on.

Also, does anyone else think that they may be jumping on the 747-8 idea a little soon? Considering they haven't even put out the 787 yet.

It does seem like Boeing wants to keep in the international market by putting out the 747-8... but I still think they should put all their effort into the 787 before going onto other projects

The A380/747-8 scenario is startingly similar to the 787/original A350 situation we saw a few years earlier.

Airbus originally attracted very few orders for its A350 - Boeing has very few orders for the 747-8 pax version

The A350 was hurriedly launched... so was the 747-8

You can see where I'm going with this...

Not sure we'll see the 'radical design change' approach this time round, but it's still odd.

Youd think Boeing would sit back and really plan out their next move... considering the way the 787 is selling, rather than just trying to get as many planes as they can out to stay on "top"...when they appear to have a comfortable place up their already.
