An airplane departs from point A with a destination of point B, 200 miles away. Halfway there, the pilot finds he is one mile off course. He makes a correction and flies directly to point B. How much extra distance did he fly by being off course?

B)      One mile
C)      Two miles

I think i figured out the math, i just dont have a calculator nearby to do it. And the windows calculator is a tad bit vague.

Here's the answer from the paper:

A)1/100 of a mile. The pilot had flown about 100.005 miles (the square root of 100 squared divided by 1 squared) at the halfway point. So he had flown 200.01 miles by the time he got to his destination.

Is that verbatim? If so the paper is astonishingly inaccurate. If they bother to do the basic maths (math for our transatlantic cousins )...

Is that the "sqrt of (100^2)" [ie, 100], or the "(sqrt of 100)^2" [again 100, but a completely different meaning!]...

divided by 1 squared

...which is, er, 1.

or, the square root of...

100 squared divided by 1 squared

...which is 10,000/1, of which the sqrt is 100.

At no stage does their answer get anywhere near explaining where they got their extra 0.005 from.

If of course they'd said:

(the square root of (100 squared plus 1 squared))

They'd have been right.

Yes, unfortunately the paper is not in error as I mistyped what I believed was a divide sign. Sorry, but my eyesight is slightly diminished due to having cataracts. Not too keen reading text on glossy paper.

I got a second opinion. It is a plus sign not a divide sign.
