Dayton Airshow... interrupted.

Postby Al_Fallujah » Mon Jul 21, 2008 11:37 pm

So we went to the Dayton Airshow, one of the better ones in the region, this past weekend. I went Saturday, and had a good time, my instructor went Sunday and got to watch the interruption.

He had also been present the year before and witnessed the fatal accident last year. He got a little worried when he heard the 757 was coming in.

During the brief cut when the 757 touches down, you can here the announcer decribing everything the pilot did during the landing. His name is Rob Reider, he is well known in aviation circles around here. Narrates some instructional videos, too.

I was en-route from Oshkosh to Greene Co. (I19) when that accident happened last year. I think I suspected something was wrong when I heard a lot of CAP Flights running around, but I don't think I knew what actually had happened until I landed.

When I saw the title of this post my first thought was "not again", but I'm glad to see that everything turned out OK.

There was a show/stunt pilot killed.
I was told something second hand as to why, but I will not repost it as I have yet to dig up the news stories, or see an FAA report.

It was the Bulldog Pitts that crashed, but for the life of me I can't remember his name.  Last year was a bad year for airshows in the US.  There was this crash and the P-51s at Oshkosh, within just a couple of weeks of each other.

Worse, only a few days. Oshkosh and the Dayton Air Show were in the same week last year. The pilot's name was Jim LeRoy.

LeRoy, why couldn't I remember that?  Sure hope this year goes much smoother.  We are already seeing a little extra traffic passing through here on the way to OSH.  Our airport is a common fuel stop when coming from the west.

Yeah! That was cool! I had a scanner/hand held radio too so I heard what all they were saying.
I got pics of that and of the airshow, will have to post some soon!
